Goldfrapp - The Bridgwater Hall, Manchester 23/06/2008 |
|
Jun 27, 2008 - 4:32 PM - by Donachiel
|
We do like a bit of Goldfrapp in our house and since the new album came out (see my review here...) it's been one of my favourites to listen to on the bus to work. However, The Bridgwater Hall in Manchester seems to be a strange venue for an Electro-disco band like Goldfrapp. Non-the-less, me decided it would just be plain rude not to go...
Now after Mr M* stood me up an hour before the gig (that's the third time now you swine) we thought we'd get an early seat, check the place out. I've been to the Bridgwater Hall twice before, once for a gig - Nick Cave and a couple of the Bad Seeds doing a quiet acoustic set - the other to see the original, silent 'Phantom of the Opera' with a live orchestra (That's the kind of venue The Bridgwater Hall is). On both of these occasions I've been surprised by the venue, and really enjoyed the show.
The stage was set up like a scene from the Wickerman, with Pagan-styled deer's head atop a may pole,... [Read More]

The White Shadow |
|
Jun 25, 2008 - 12:48 PM - by anancientrace

It doesn't matter who you are!" warbled Chris Martin in the song "Square One" - followed by "White Shadows" but it does doesn't it?
Not some sort of new super hero - The White Shadow - but he must where a teflon suit - albeit with his pants worn over it.
I was watching a TV programme on BBC Four on the making of the "Iron Lady". And her son gave us a rare - about seven word interview.
My wife and I disagree on HRH Thatcher's merit - so I assume I am wrong and she (Madge) is and was a good egg.
But I am reading a piece on SIR MARK THATCHER! I had earlier asked my missus why "Sir" and she suggested perhaps inherited from Margaret... [Read More]

The Police - M.E.N. Arena - 17th June |
Jun 18, 2008 - 10:33 PM - by jools182
|
Went to see The Police play in Manchester last night and was well impressed.
I got into them when I was very young, must have been 8 or 9 when a mate of my Dads lent us the Regatta De Blanc album. Then my Dad bought a copy and me and my brother basically nicked it!
We used to play it all the time. We even wanted to be The Police although there were only two of us
I was always pretending to be Stewart Copeland, who is the best drummer in the World EVER!
I never thought I would get to see them play live as they were only together from 1977 to 1984, and I was still too young to go to concerts then
When I heard they were reforming for a tour I was well chuffed and was on the phone first thing to get tickets. I still managed to get tickets miles away from the stage though. I don't know how these people get tickets right near the front ... [Read More]

Albinism |
|
Jun 06, 2008 - 6:51 PM - by Mr Morningstarr*
|
Albinism is a hereditary disease which prevents the body from making the correct amounts of the pigment melanin.
Due to the lack of melanin being produced a person with the condition has no pigment to their hair, skin and eyes and has a very pale, ghostly appearance.
An albino's pale white skin which lacks melanin is unprotected from the sun's harmful ultra-violet rays, and albinos can suffer terribly from sunburn if they have too much exposure to the sun. Albinism isn't terminal itself, but the risks from skin cancer are alarmingly high.
The eyes of an albino animal are often red, this is due to blood vessels in the eye not being covered by pigment. Because human eyes are much bigger in relation to animal eyes, this effect is rarely present. There will still be a lack of pigment though, and the eyes are usually only... [Read More]

Body Worlds: A review. |

I went to see this fella (and others) yesterday:
This is the fella that plastinated him:
This is where I went to see the exhibits:
Dr. Gunther Von Hagens "controversial" exhibition comes to Manchester!
On a beautiful, sunny day in Manchester, I chose to spend a couple of hours in a windowless room, with some corpses.
The exhibition starts off with small stuff (quite literally. Ear-bones. The smallest bones in the human body) and explanations of the plastination process that is used to preserve the bodies for us to gawp at.
Just round the corner however, the stuff that you really... [Read More]

Madonna - Hard Candy |
|
May 06, 2008 - 7:54 PM - by Donachiel
|
I can sum this up in two short lines. I've been listening to the new Madonna album 'Hard Candy', and as the title suggests, it's hard to swallow.
But that wouldn't be fair on good ol' Madge. Nor would have writting this on my first listen. I'll explain...
I listened to this album on the bus to my real job in the morning. In the full hour running time, I went through a number of emotions for this, Madonna's eleventh studio album. Now let's not beat around the bush - if bush beating were a past time of mine - I'm not into this kind of music. I loved Madonna in the eighties (didn't we all?) then my growing disinterest turned to loathing in the nineties, about the time of the ego-rugging snore-umentary, 'In bed with Madonna' came to light. That was until her triumphant return in 1998 with 'Ray of Light', and a carefully calculated collaboration with William Orbit (of the chewing gum, fame).
Slowly, I think she has been testing my patience, what with some... [Read More]

Eric Idle & Shrek III |
|
Apr 21, 2008 - 5:31 PM - by Ricardo
|
Sorry if I missed a thread about this when I searched, but has anybody heard what happened after Eric Idle accused the makers of Shrek III of ripping off the "coconut/horse hooves" gag?
I remember hearing he was mad about it.
In Shrek III the coconuts are part of sound effects in a play within the movie, which I suppose would be different from their use in Holy Grail from a legal point of view?
I mean because in Holy Grail there's no practical reason for them in the story, right?

The Australian Pink Floyd - Manchester Apollo 06/04/2008 |
|
Apr 08, 2008 - 10:38 PM - by Mr Morningstarr*
|
"I can't explain, you would not understand, this is not how I am. I have become comfortably numb."
<p style="text-align: left;">It really is a strange place to be; amongst all the dry ice and lasers, listening to some of the most iconic songs of the '70's and '80's, yet not by the band who wrote them. The Manchester Apollo is filled with middle-aged men and the smell of stale fags, Blue Stratos and beer. Barring some kids (or maybe even grandkids) of one fan who have come along, Mrs D and myself are the youngest in attendance. But there is something truly magical about the music of Pink Floyd – like going to watch a musical, or rock opera – that it really doesn't matter that you're not 'actually' listening to the real thing. Especially as this is their 'Best of The Wall tour', with mainly highlights from Pink Floyds' spectacular concept album/Rock Opera. Really, 'Aussie Floyd' have made a name for themselves as one of – if not 'the' – best Pink Floyd tribute acts around, and they really can deliver the goods. Dave Gilmour once watched them perform in 1994,... [Read More]
