Freedom or security-what do you think?
Regardless of specific conspiracies that may or may not be happening in our name right now, which do you believe should get greater priority?
Freedom or security?
We could argue there must be a way to guarantee security AND freedom. This would be nice. However the truth appears to be somewhat more difficult.
If you want security, we are told we must sacrifice some freedoms. Freedom of privacy, freedom of movement and perhaps freedom of expresion.
If you want freedom, we are told that we must be prepared to risk others exercising THEIR freedom of privacy, freedom of movement and freedom of expression in order to commit acts of terrorism (aka freedom fighting).
This freedom of expression may include the right to shove extremist* views down everyone elses throats-via many modes.
So is there an actual solution? Is there a real ethical human solution?
Is wrapping everyone in cotton wool and making sure that nothing can harm a hair truly moral?
Is allowing everyone the freedom to express and be themselves safe enough for others?
Or is it possible, being living ever changing beings, that there can only ever be a pendulum of near totalitarianism and anarchy?
I'm not coming to a conclusion as such. Interested to see what people think.
My views, being objective, unbiased and not at all influenced by my own lifestyle , is that Franklin had it right.
"Those who would trade Freedom for Security deserve neither."
I strongly prefer freedom and individual right of expression-anyone prefer the opposite?
*In case the word extremist evokes a particular religion-I mean it to encompass ANY extremism that is known to have exploited violence or questionable tactics. Animal rights, religion or political groups.
