    Default Ooh Matron!

As part of Mr brown focusing on crime and health he's said that he would more than double the number of matrons in hospitals to around 5,000 to help the drive on cleanliness.

Brown has outlined plans for a "deep clean" of all NHS hospitals, an increase in the numbers of matrons and new powers for the Healthcare Commission to ensure cleanliness on the wards.

"We are going to do it probably around Christmas and the New Year when hospitals are quieter," he said. "We are going to deep clean. We will put matrons in charge. There will be more matrons, 5,000 matrons, when there are just over 2,000 at the moment.

"Ward sisters will have new powers. Cleaning contractors will have to be under the supervision of the Healthcare Commission. We will make sure, just as we have been dealing with MRSA, we are going to deal also with this new bug C Difficile."

I like this idea, it's certainly a step in the right direction. We all want a better, more efficient National Health Service but for the past decade or so hospitals have been plagued by bugs which has been proven to be down to lack of hygiene/cleanliness. It's ok that the staff in the hospitals complain that they are already overworked but hygiene in a hospital environment is a basic which has been overlooked time and time again.

I'm pleased that Brown has pledged to tackle this, I only hope that he throws enough resources into it to make it happen and realises that this is not the place to scrimp.

    This is a weird story!
As far as my sister-in-law tells us, matrons were completely dispensed with a number of years ago, maybe they just didn't bother to tell Gordo yet?

Sis-in-law has just semi-retired from nursing, after 40 years in the service, so I imagine she would know.

I'll ring her later to double check.

Where are they going to get all these matrons from in six months?

This subject is obviously close to your heart Ck - perhaps you would make a good matron yourself?

    I can just picture you now;

    matron - Ooh Matron!

"Time for your bed bath Mr. Vonz!"

    Update on matrons:
They aren't the old fashioned matrons anymore, they're jumped up ward sisters come managers who normally control 3 wards each.
Gordo's plan will probably not even come close to working, I'm told, 'Deep Cleaning' is supposedly something that was always done, but has been neglected over the years.

Yet another Nushite piece of Bullshite.

One of the biggest problems is visitors who come to see patients, and lack of hand washing. I visited someone in hospital recently, and there was one of those dispensers with hand cleaner in it. There was sign saying that visitors should use the hand cleaner, but nobody was enforcing that. All visitors should only be allowed on the wards when they've used it IMO.
    What a hoot!

Sister Mon says it would be nice if the consultants washed their hands occasionally!

If they have 3 wards each now then that means they'll have just over one each when he's employed all the extra. That's got to be a good thing.
