Default There's always more good news.

Todays news item to grump about, not worthy of inclusion in FreeB's new.

I'm sure it happens everywhere, so don't get your knickers iin a twist because I only quote UK crime and failings.
I'm sure Spain and anywhere else is worse if you say so, but this is your country, the country that you live in and I sincerely hope that none of you are ever involved in any incident like these or get sick and need hospitalisation!

Boy, 11, dies after pub shooting
M5 shut after police car shot at
Six held after man shot in face
Stroke victims are "dying unnecessarily" because Britain provides some of the worst treatment in Europe.
UK cancer survival rate lowest in Europe

Sleep well, I'm sure that being fireproof will help.

But you could probably do the same with the news from any country. Of course these are problems, but they are not only happening here. They are happening the world over. I woulod just like to ask what exactly you expect us to do about it, but I probably won't get an answer. Another point to make is that we read OUR news BECAUSE this is our country and this is where we live. What is your excuse and why don't you report he crime statistics in Spain? Just what IS your point in all this?

Plus, most of these news articles are picking out bits from all the surveys that are done that denigrate Britain, because they are what gets newspapers sold, not because they are giving a balanced viewpoint or even attempting to.

I know this isn't aimed directly at me, but I'm also an expat, so feel I should respond because your comments relate to me as well.

This is something that really really riles me, so don't take offence (I think we've 'argued' about this before Timey, so I'll be gentle with you ).

People who leave the UK don't wash their hands of the country. Why do you think people like me and SFB are on predominantly British forums if we have no interest in the country or the people? Why should we be made to feel we have no right to read 'YOUR' news? I've 'left' my home country, so do I now not have the right to show interest in the country anymore?. I've also 'left' my family and friends in the UK, do I also not have the right to show an interest in what they're doing either?

I felt like shit because of some people not that long after I left England. I didn't leave because I hated the country or the people - I didn't 'abandon' my roots and stop caring, but I was made to feel like a outcast. That might've been okay, but I also wasn't (and never will be) classed as French either. I'd love to know what I'm classed as now because I seem to be stuck in nowhere land. It's a horrible feeling to be told you now don't belong anywhere. I thought the British (especially the Scottish) were known for their welcoming and friendly nature. To be made to feel like I've been disowned by people in 'OUR' country, not YOUR country is an awful feeling.

Some people say expats shun and turn their backs on their country (thinking they're better then the people left behind ), but I wasn't the one turning my back on it - it was 'some' people turning their back on me when I left.

It makes me so annoyed I might just come back over there and fake an address to take all I can off YOUR NHS because these dentist bills are killing me. I haven't used what I paid in, so I'll take it back. While I'm there I might as well register to vote and help get the BNP in, then come back to France and let you reap what I sewed.

Well said A_B, likewise Mrs S and myself are no drain on the NHS!
I think Timey missed this part of my post:

I actually did offer to report Spanish news to anyone who is interested, but no one replied.

I'd report French news, but I think I'd be talking to myself.

I doubt many people would even be remotely interested in what goes on in France and Spain unless the news was that extreme it was being reporting in UK as well.

It's interesting that you feel you're in nowhere land AB. Only yesterday I was criticised a little bit for saying that I wouldn't want to live abroad because I wouldn't feel at home.

I take your point that we probably wouldn't be so interested in Spanish or French news, it's just that SFB only seems to concentrate on the negative aspects of the UK, never the good. It almost seems like he's gloating about the fact that he doesn't have to put up with all the "bad" things.

OK, what's happening of note in France?

Local newsflash from Novelda, sorry it's 2 weeks old and only a domestic:
Husband stabs wife, takes her out, sits her on a bench, calls police and tells them she was attacked, takes her home, police arrive, she's taken to hospital and dies later.

He later admits to throwing a knife at her and is arrested.

You missed the point. I was talking about just after I left England before I settled in France (when I was maybe homesick ). You don't just move to a country and 'fit in' - it takes years to feel at home. I was made to feel like I didn't 'belong' in England after I left, yet the French were more accommodating - hence why I feel more at home in France now. It's strange, France is considered a racist country, yet I felt more welcome here then in England after leaving, so this is now where my heart is for the time being.

Do you think that's what A_B meant? I took it to mean that she was talking about the way jealous people treated her initially, but I'm sure she'll reply herself.

Give me some positive aspects to mention and I'll willingly applaud them! London won the chance to have the 2012 Olympics, great, yippee!

Except that it's turning out to be millions over budget, probably won't be finished by the due date and the bill is being paid by Londoners.

You have a new PM in Gordo.

Does anything good happen? I haven't changed the colour of my feelings for my country since I lived there, they're the same as they have been since around the beginning of the 80s!

Luckily I missed the Blair era!

Edit: A_B beat me to the reply.
