You said that illness killed more soldiers than enemy fire did. That doesn't back up that comment, it just states the obvious which is that disease kills more people than war.

With regards to artillery claiming the most casualties, who was firing it?

I can see where SFB is coming with this. A man throws a bomb and kills hundreds or a man stands with a rifle and kills one person.

Granted the bomb/artillery needs to be started by a person but the ratio of killings would be very different to someone standing with a rifle.

Without bombs etc people could only kill one person per bullet... with the creation of bombs they can kill hundreds remaining detatched from the situation because they did not look that man in the eye and shoot him... they simply dropped a bomb, back in the day they probably weren't even aware of the affects in the early days of WW1... I would imagine.

So you see, Timey was quite right to say if this was 1914 he could be called on to kill people. Except he's too old.

Did you know that 'IF' is the biggest word in the English language?

Timey was relating to the story in question, what's wrong with that?

What this man did was amazing bearing in mind that the slightest mistake would have meant him being killed himself. There are so many untold stories about what happened, good and bad, but I remember my grandad talking about his time in WW1 and they were amazing stories.
I was reading on another forum about PTSD and you'd be surprised how much goes on in wars such as the Falklands and Iraq... it's not nice when people see things that no-one should HAVE to see.

People tend to talk about wars and thinks of WW1 and WW2 yet forget that there are men fighting in wars today, right now.
