A VIOLENT burglar who attacked a man was blinded in one eye when his victim fought back.

Thug Joey Hoban, 24, forced his way in and laid into Paul Kerr with a knuckleduster.

But he came off worse when Mr Kerr, 29, grabbed a knife to defend himself and stabbed his assailant several times — once between the eyes.

The blade severed an optic nerve, causing Hoban to lose the sight in his right eye.

The attack happened in January at Mr Kerr’s home in Blackpool, Lancs. Hoban, of Blackpool, admitted burglary and grievous bodily harm and was jailed for 23 months at Preston Crown Court.

His lawyer Virginia Hayton said he now feared losing the sight in his good eye.

She added: “He was stabbed in the bridge of the nose and the blade of the knife entered the back of his eye and severed an optic nerve.

“A puncture wound damaged his lung. His lung has now collapsed on two occasions. There are concerns he may lose the sight in his other eye.

“He is not the cocksure young man he used to be.”

Hoban, who has a long criminal history, was given an Asbo in 2003 aged 15 and convicted of wounding with intent in 2005.
Judge Andrew Menary said: “Only an immediate prison sentence can be imposed”.

I read in a book, an autobiography of a lifer, I can't remember his blinkin name now but it'll come to me, anyways, he said that it's popular for hated prisoners to have their eyes attacked because it carries a more lenient punishment than killing them and it makes their living life a hell because they can't see who is approaching them, scares them witless apparently.
