Woman student, 22, 'savagely raped' after she was thrown off night bus because she was 20p short on cost of fare

  • Law student set upon after being 'turfed off' 3am bus
  • Beating she received during rape was so savage her mother 'couldn't immediately recognise her'

A law student was dragged into a park and savagely raped after being ‘turfed off’ the last bus home because she was 20p short of the £5 fare, a court has heard.
The 22-year-old victim was left stranded in a city centre at 3am after the bus driver refused to wait a few moments so she could withdraw extra money from a nearby cash dispenser. But after walking for less than a mile, the prosecution claim she was targeted by drink-fuelled Joseph Moran, who then allegedly launched a ‘savage’ attack which was ‘almost devoid of any mercy’, a court heard.

The 19-year-old then apparently calmly raised the alarm with a passing police patrol police, claiming to have stumbled across her semi-naked body.
The court heard that after being turned away by the Nottingham bus driver, the student called her mother who agreed to collect her for the 14 mile journey home.
Prosecutor Michael Auty told the court that the victim volunteered to walk to the edge of the city centre to spare her mother from having to negotiate a one-way system she was unfamiliar with.
She was beaten and raped just yards from where her mother had stopped to search for her. When the pair were eventually united, Mr Auty said the injuries were so severe that her mother didn’t immediately recognise her.
Mr Auty said the victim had been out celebrating the end of her graduate diploma in law exams when she boarded the late bus last December.
He said: ‘The fare was £5. She had only £4.80. The bus driver would not waive the 20p.
