'Regional Pay'

Just heard talk of this on 5 Live.

Something about nurses/docs in London being paid more for a given job because the cost of living is higher there.

Should someone in a region that is, say, 7% more expensive than, say, Cornwall for the basics (food, utility bills, council tax, etc...) be paid 7% more than someone in Cornwall who is 'doing the same job' there ?

Or should they be paid the same, as they are 'doing the same job' ?

Or go down the middle and pay them 3.5% more ?

You pay them as little as possible. If they can get away with paying less, that's what they'll do. If they need to pay more to encourage people to move to expensive areas, that's what they have to do.

A lot of jobs already pay more if they're in London. Public sector jobs have what they call London weighting and it's such a percent higher than anywhere else. I think what Cameron is after is that the people up North get even less than what they do now in order to save the government money.

It doesn't make sense in my head though because if I lived in a shitty cheap area, like Blackburn for example but because my current wage was low I was unable to escape, what Cameron is proposing means that I could simple re-locate to a nicer area and be paid enough to support my new lifestyle in my new home. That would mean that there would be no point in any businesses starting up in Blackburn because any fucker with any common sense would up sticks therefore leaving them without a workforce.

I can't imagine the food being dearer in the Smoke than it is around here.
