Regarding doctors dishing out happy pillz I can only go on that which I get from news media and it does seem to be a lot and unnecessary at times.

Well, she answered the question in the article. People are going to doctors but they don't have the resources to deal with the issues in some other way, e.g. counselling (waiting lists for that can be 6-12 months depending on the area) so prescribing the pills is the easiest solution and probably actually cheaper in the long run. Maybe we need to look at why so many people feel the need for these "solutions" in the first place. I've been on the pills myself and can tell you that they simply don't work, or they encourage you to think that they are an easy fix. Ultimately, the specific problems have to be tackled, not just take pills to supposedly forget about the issues that are causing the problem in the first place.
