I think the government should employ a 'three strikes' policy when it comes to repeat offenders. If someone commits three criminal offences they should be jailed for life, they've had their chances.

I think they do that in America and it puts most of the worst ones out of action, go for in my opinion.

So if someone shoplifts three times they should be jailed for life, so that the government pays for their life behind bars?

Yes, I'd go for that. But they'd also have to revamp the prisons system so the twats are either doing forced labour, or just dumped on some island somewhere where they turn into primeval savages bumming each other to death and quarreling over who holds the conch.

I doubt anyone daft enough to carry on committing crime gives it all that much thought.

There are cases in the States where people have been done for two serious crimes, and it's something daft like shoplifting which finally sees them getting sent down for life.
