It is a pity the police dog did not do more damage to the thieving criminal.

A burglary suspect had his ear bitten off by a police dog while being arrested by officers.

The suspect was attacked by a police dog after being chased

Leon Reid, 31, was mauled by the canine after being pursued police in New Cross, South London.

Police told Sky News Online the incident occured following a two-and-a-half hour chase by helicopter and on the ground.

"Lewisham police were called at 8:11pm last Saturday to Jerningham Road in New Cross to reports of a man acting suspiciously in a nearby garden," a Met spokesman said.

"Officers from the air support unit kept track of the suspect as police with dogs pursued him.

"The man was eventually detained on Pepys Road. At this point he received injuries and was taken by ambulance to hospital where he received surgery to his ear."

Legal experts told Sky Online that the case did raise serious questions over whether the officers involved exercised reasonable restraint.

They explained that any compensation payout would depend on physical and psychological injuries sustained by Reid, as well as the exact circumstances surrounding the attack.

Whether the dog had been properly trained would also be factored in.
