    The general idea within etymological circles is that it is the mimicking of the Welsh pronunciation of the name Dafydd (the Welsh variant of David)

    (had to research a paper once on the etymology of stereotype markers during a course on historical linguistics - for some reason that one stayed with me )

    That was what I thought too.

    BTW, Dafydd is pronounced "davith".
