So really, the 1960's stuff came at the end of years of Paddy-bashing by the brits.
Look at the brits hanging and shooting 'em in the early 20th Century.
It's just something I believe in but not prepared to fall out over.
Their greatest anti-Brit weapon yet must be Michael flatley, and he should be banned by the Geneva Convention.
Just had a water fight over the park with a bunch of local kids.
    I won!

We shouldn't fall out over it - in fact I agree with you generally. I just think that the UK government was in an invidious position by the time we got to the 1960s. The problem was that Home Rule had been agreed for BOTH parts of Ireland. This left the Northern Ireland government able to change the rules to suit themselves and by the late 60s people had had enough. All very unfortunate, but if you read some of the stuff about the truce and treaty of 1922 you can see the difficulties that people on all sides were under. MC agreed to the treaty on the basis that he felt it was the best chance for independence. It has had its problems, but it was seen as the best solution at the time, and the Irish people accepted it.

Mr M, I see where you are going, but, if after the poll-tax riots the American army occupied the UK to maintain peace we would ALL be plotting acts of insurgency now, against the septics.
I don't know where I'm going with this yet. I don't know what trouble there was!

All I can say is if the situation was bad enough for a military response I can't see it happening here anytime soon and it hardly compares to a bunch of unwashed cretins rioting about poll tax.

Don't you see? it's hard to imagine living in an occupied country, it is just beyond anything we can believe.
Yet WE do it all over the world and are "surprised" when the little devils take umbrage.
Must go, got to bang me bin lid on the pavement outside.
    Happy Monday guys.

From my recollection the poll tax riots were rather wider spread then just limited to a bunch of unwashed cretins.

That's not how I remember it. It was only really an issue in central London, one collection of arseholes that just made things worse for themselves the tossers.

And I can't really see Chippy's comparison. British troops were not an occupying force in Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland was part of Britain.

If British troops took to the streets because of civil unrest in this country then so be it. Fortunately there's never too much trouble that riot police shoving newspaper stand owners can't fix.

I went to see him at Wembley a few years ago CC, and whatever anyone says about him he's a brilliant dancer.
