Road speed limit cut to 50mph

THE government is to cut the national speed limit from 60mph to 50mph on most of Britain’s roads, enforced by a new generation of average speed cameras.

The reduction , to be imposed as early as next year, will affect two thirds of the country’s road network. Drivers will still be able to reach 70mph on motorways and dual carriageways and 60mph on the safest A roads.

Jim Fitzpatrick, the roads minister, defended the plan, which will be the most dramatic cut since 1978, when the national speed limit was reduced from 70mph to 60mph.

“There will be some in the driving lobby who think this is a further attack and a restriction on people’s freedom,” he said. “But when you compare that to the fact we are killing 3,000 people a year on our roads, it would be irresponsible not to do something about it. I’m sure that the vast majority of motorists would support the proposals.”

We actually have some of the safest roads in the world. I don't see a need for it, but the experts reckon it could save as many as 250 lives a year or something.

I don't know how they work that out though, and as far as I'm concerned it will only save the lives of 250 incompetent idiots who can't drive properly.

The standard of vehicles is going up and the speed limits are coming down. This has fuck all to do with safety and everything to do with making more money out of motorists.

I think murderers get less hassle than motorists

The national speed limit is only present on roads that are low risk, usually with no housing and very few junctions. Like Mr M said if you crash there you are probably just incompetent.

I reckon we shouldn't panic yet. The main 'A' roads will still be 60mph. The ones with 50mph limits will probably be the ones where you are lucky to get above 40. And it means you can probably still do approaching 60mph without getting stopped anyway. I don't see it affecting us very much at any rate, although I don't really agree with it.

It's not a tax on motorists, speeding motorists choose to speed so they must be prepared for the consequences.

As for that MP's comments, speed doesn't kill, poor driving does.
