German Artist, Tomma Abts has won this years Turner Prize. The abstract artist is known for her small works of art made of oil and acrylics.

A German abstract artist has become the first female painter to win the Turner Prize, one of art's top awards.

Tomma Abts' victory is a departure from the more outlandish and controversial works that have taken the prize in recent years.

Abts, who lives in London, is also only the fourth painter to claim the award and the first one since 1998.

The 38-year-old creates small oil and acrylic works which are always in the same 48cm by 38cm format.

She said she begins every piece with no idea what she is about to paint and that they symbolise nothing at all.
