Re: sorry aint been about been dipping into linux
Are there any specific benefits you can tell us about?
I'll be buying a new computer soon and a local company supply them with Linux installed at no extra cost, but charge for installing other systems.

Re: sorry aint been about been dipping into linux
virtually virus free, there are about 14 known viruses, you can get antivirus for linux.
Its free that how I got into it, I got a tower of me dad and it had a ntldr issue on loading(basically it wouldnt boot into windows. Didnt have recovery disks so basically wiped the windows os off and put ubuntu on and its been working fine.
If they do install linux ask them for ubuntu, I done my research and this seems a version thats easier to use. It is also a learning process as you have to use your command line for various things.
I would ask the store if they would put the codecs and plugins on for you(this is to enable you to play dvd and so forth)if they dont there is a really good program called automatix that will help you do it.
If you are going to go wireless ask them for a linux friendly adaptor as have seen peeps have a few problems connecting.
If your just going to surf the web and use basic applications ubuntu would be the way to go.
You can use firefox for web browsing, amsn so you can still uses msn.
At the end of the day the linux way would be cheaper, but you have to be willing to learn a few things and do a bit of research there are also large forum based communities out there who you can ask any question and they tend to know the answers.

Re: sorry aint been about been dipping into linux
Thanks for the info Playme, I'll check with the shop guy.
I may have a secondary problem cos it'll be in Spanish, but I managed Win XP in Spanish, so I should be able to handle another system as long as it's not too techie.

There are language conversion programs already installed, but would say to the guy install in english, me thinks he should be able to do that. He will either already have a disk or can easily download the english version, linux is free so its not going to cost him anything, also ask him to give you the install disk he used to install the system just in case

Re: sorry aint been about been dipping into linux
I'll do that, they didn't give me the installation CD when I bought this PC and I had to install a pirate XP after it crashed.
Funny thing is that I was asked to register it eventually and Windows didn't query it's validity!?!

Re: sorry aint been about been dipping into linux
You can actually obtain a linux cd eith free off the net but could take weeks, or download it yourself, or get it of ebay mine cost 1.50.
If your not sure about linux and want to try it you can get what they call a live cd which will let you try it before before you install, also you can have ubuntu and xp on the same hard drive. And when you start the pc it will ask you what os you would like to boot into.
Regarding the xp dont know how it let you do that, but hey if it worked then good for you, but the pc guy should of supplied you with a recovery disk.
