Default What are the features of a good painting?

I am sorry if the thread is not a proper one.In fact I being a science student,do not have much understanding of a good painting. If you can just give some features,it would enhance my knowledge. Thanks in advance.

I can't answer that.

A painting can be of anything and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

What makes a good painting for one person may have the opposite effect on another.

I suppose in broad terms, composition, tone and how the paint is applied has something to do with it.

Weird question.

Yeah, it's very subjective really. I like landscapes as I like countryside anyway, and the way a painter depicts the light in the sky, or the reflection on a lake or whatever can be fascinating. I love some of Monet's stuff, e.g. the Water Lilies - the feeling of summer in that, and some of his other stuff, is wonderful. I also like Turner though - his atmospherics are wonderful, e.g. in The Fighting Temeraire. I can also appreciate some of the more classical stuff as well, and Picasso had a really good way of representing things.

The thing is, you can't answer the question simply.

Mondrian:

Can't really be compared to Turner:

The two both use paint in very different ways.

I have always loved that Turner image btw. For some reason, that I now forget, I always associate it with Dvorak's "New World Symphony".

Yeah, well, the first one I can't really appreciate unless I know what the artist is trying to represent. The second one is obvious as it represents things that I am familiar with, and he has been able to represent them in a way that I would find difficult to do myself, so I can appreciate it more.

There is no such thing as good features in a painting. Painting is an art and very very subjective. Even an elephant in Thailand can paint by stomping paint and some consider it a masterpiece.
