It is an undisputed fact that whenever Oprah chooses a book for her Oprah Book Club, the book will straightaway rise from obscurity to best seller. Is this a healthy development? What do you think of the books she had chosen?
I don't watch Oprah but a show here called Richard and Judy started a book club for it's viewers and the same happened.
I think it gives a skewered view, as although the books are advertised as best sellers it doesn't mean that they are any good, they just got lucky to be picked to be read by a huge circle of people.
I think it's good in that her book club has encouraged non-readers to start reading again. If they pick up and read something she recommends, then they might become avid readers in general.
There's a stigma attached to her book picks--they become bestsellers, but a lot of "serious" readers assume they're trash. So there is an up and down side to it.
Oprah's shows are quite a hit and I too find them very interesting.The recommendations in her show are bound to do well because of her popularity.I would just assume that her choice must be at least worth a try.
There is always a tie of popularity and advertising. I don't read book for it is highly recommended by someone popular. Before I read, I always ask myself on how the book could help me. By the way, I don't stick to one author.
