Re: What book would you recommend, and why?
I think everyone should read Nineteen Eighty Four at least once. It is a warning as to what can happen if the government gets too much control.

Read The Fountainhead and started reading Atlas Shrugged several days ago.
Another vote for these two. Even if you don't entirely agree with Ayn Rand's philosophy, these two are greatly entertaining to read, IMO.

Re: What book would you recommend, and why?
Night by Elie Wiesel. An excellent book, not too long and part of a trilogy but can be bought on its own.
It's a kind of autobiographical account of his childhood and how his family reacted to the German invasion. Their absolute belief that the rumours of 'death camps' were untrue, their eventual journey to the camp.
It's hard to describe how good this book is. It's not depressing amazingly enough. It's rather uplifting. His writing style is very accessible and the book itself is quite short. I read it in one sitting as it was un-put-downable.
Night by Elie Wiesel.

It sounds really interesting. I'll have a look for that one at the weekend.

The Third Policeman
It's surreal, funny and thought-provoking. And funny.

I would strongly suggest "Fountainhead",by Ian Rand, because it depicts the true meaning of being ideally selfless.

I've just ordered Neuromancer and The Difference Engine by William Gibson. They sound interesting and will be a new genre for me to get into.
