Rare Superman comic sells for $317,200
A rare copy of the first comic book featuring Superman has sold for $317,200 in an Internet auction. The previous owner had bought it for less than a buck. It's one of the highest prices ever paid for a comic book, a likely testament to the volume's rarity...

Mr M,
What about a Comics thread.
As a kid I lived in comics, from the Commando type ones with features on hand grenades inside the cover....."Aaaaiiiiieeeeeee, die english pig-dog" "Not so fast Fritz". I learned to speak from these books, really fucked up my first few interviews.
Then we had the "broadsheets"
Dandy, Beano, Victor, Valient, Buster, Lion, tiger, topper, whizzer and chips etc
Alf tupper, the tough of the track.
The Crimson Ball.
Wolf of Kabul with Cheung, "Clicky bat turn in my hand" .
General Jumbo was one of my favourites.
Black Bob, the sheepdog.
Later comics were the glossies with all the sci-fi.
Memories are made of this.
Just had a water fight over the park with a bunch of local kids.
I won!

Blimmin' eck. Whizzer and Chips? I remember buying that on the very day that it was first sold. It was about 1972 if my memory serves me correctly.
EDIT: W&C started in 1969. I think I'm thinking of Knockout, which started in 1971. Some of the characters in W&C came from Knockout later on.

They used to give you free gifts.
The one shaped like a triangle that made a CRACK noise if you made a chopping sweep with it.
With the glossies it would be something like Stick-on badges.
Have a good day.![]()

Re: Rare Superman comic sells for $317,200
I used to read whizzer and chips, I liked the numbskulls.
I used to read a geeky kids mag full of world records and inventions and visions of the future called "Look and Learn". I used to get it delivered every Saturday morning and I always read the comic-strip first. It was called the Trigan Empire and was a futuristic tale of folk who are a bit like the Romans getting attacked by armies of giant bugs. Some of the earlier stories were really trippy, I remember one where an alien spore takes over a childs doll and it gets all big and killy.
Got to go, I am being "summoned".

I get them mixed up sometimes. Numbskulls was great, who else was in Whizzer and Chips?
Did anyone read Cheeky? I had the annual from 1981 I think.

Beezer, Beano, Dandy, and Twinkle

Re: Rare Superman comic sells for $317,200
Were the numbskulls the midget things that lived in a head?

Re: Rare Superman comic sells for $317,200
Yeah, and they controlled the body with levers and knobs and things. They were classic.
I thought they were in the Beezer though.
