Re: On this day in history...............
19th March:
1970: Heads of East and West Germany meet
For the first time in history, the leaders of the West and East German governments, Willy Brandt and Willi Stoph respectively, meet at Erfurt in East Germany. Chancellor Brandt's decision to pursue Ostpolitik, or eastern policy, was a bold reversal of the traditional West German policy that sought to isolate East Germany from the rest of the world. In 1973, the two countries granted each other full diplomatic recognition, and both were admitted into the United Nations. Brandt was awarded the 1971 Nobel Peace Prize for his work toward easing tensions between Eastern and Western Europe.

Re: On this day in history...............
20th March:
1995: Nerve gas attack on Tokyo subway.
At the height of morning rush hour, terrorists from the Aum Shinrikyo religious cult converge at the Kasumigaseki subway station in Tokyo and release lethal sarin gas into the air.
The terrorists then took a sarin antidote and escaped while the commuters, blinded and gasping for air, rushed to the exits.
Twelve people died, and over 5,000 were treated in hospitals, many in a comatose state.
In the attack's aftermath, Japanese police raided Aum Shinrikyo headquarters and arrested hundreds of members, including the cult's leader, Master Shoko Asahara. The cult, which combined Buddhism and yoga with apocalyptic Christian philosophy, was already under investigation for a 1994 sarin attack that killed seven and for the murder of several political opponents.

Re: On this day in history...............
21st of March:
1960: Massacre in Sharpeville
In the black township of Sharpeville, near Johannesburg, South Africa, Afrikaner police open fire on a group of unarmed African demonstrators, killing 69 people and wounding 180 in a hail of submachine-gun fire. The demonstrators were protesting against the South African government's restriction of non-white travel. In the aftermath of the Sharpeville massacre, protests broke out in Cape Town, and more than 10,000 people were arrested before government troops restored order. The incident convinced anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela to abandon his nonviolent stance and organize paramilitary groups to fight South Africa's system of institutionalized racial discrimination. In 1964, after some minor military action, Mandela was convicted of treason and sentenced to life in prison. He was released after 27 years and was elected the first black president of South Africa in 1994.

Re: On this day in history...............
22nd March:
1945: Arab League formed
Representatives from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Transjordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Yemen meet in Cairo to establish the Arab League, a regional organization of Arab states. Formed to foster economic growth in the region, resolve disputes between its members, and coordinate political aims, members of the Arab League formed a council, with each state receiving one vote. When the State of Israel was created in 1948, the league countries jointly attacked but were repulsed by the Israelis. Two years later, Arab League nations signed a mutual defense treaty. Fifteen more Arab nations eventually joined the organization, which established a common market in 1965.
