Re: On this day in history...............
It's the country that preceded Germany and lay across the north of what is now Germany (mainly East Germany) and into what is now Poland and Lithuania. It merged with other German states in 1871 to form the modern country, although large swathes of it have now been lost following the two world wars. The Prussians were a very proud, stoic people with a harsh aristocracy (the Junkers), very different from the more laid back southern Germans. Strictly speaking, Bavaria should never have been part of Germany, being very catholic as opposed to the presbyterian Prussians, and in fact it was once part of Austria and even independent for a while, but it was persuaded to join the Customs League that eventually became Germany. Prussians are caricatured as being those types with the big moustaches and helmets with a spike on the top.
Sorry, went on a bit there but I've always been into German history.

18th March:
1962: French-Algerian truce
On March 18, 1962, France and Algeria sign a truce to end the Algerian War, signaling the end of 130 years of colonial French rule. In 1954, Muslim guerrillas of the Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) launched a war of independence in Algeria. By 1956, the FLN was threatening to overrun the colonial cites, home to Algeria's sizable European settler population, and 500,000 French troops were sent to Algeria to crush the revolt. By 1958, the FLN had been pushed back into rural areas, but a new crisis erupted when European Algerians launched massive demonstrations calling for the integration of Algeria with France and the return of Charles de Gaulle to power. On March 18, 1962, de Gaulle oversaw the signing of a truce, and the bloody Algerian War officially came to an end.

Possibly to sniff it's rear end).
