The choices are either the barrier of lightspeed as described by relativity are 100% solid and correct..or like most theories, merely a very good model that nearly explains everything.
I suspect the latter to be honest from the physics reading I've dabbled in over time. We don't know. That's the truth. We have very educated guesses but that's all. Our models are by no means complete. We can't predict everything with them yet.
Certainly chemical or nuclear propulsion is out of the question. Anything requiring reaction pushing against mass is not going to happen. Chances are folding space, playing with space/time itself in some fashion is the way it will go..if at all.
That said, there isn't an expert who can guarantee 100% there's noone out there crossing the stars.
They can debate it that's all.
