Yep. I read that in Focus mag. Bodily functions can fail but it all depends on the part of the brain that controls the heart - if that bit can't be maintained, then the heart stops and then the brain itself dies. It's possible even to be shot in the head and not die but I remember the chilling words - "if the medulla oblongata is damaged then there is no way back".
